Thumbs Up 27/9/07

What a gig. Great artists at a great venue! I think maybe Thumbs up has got to be the best club to see live music in Japan. Everyone is getting into some great food and drinks and conversation. The music is just loud enough, but not too loud that you can’t hear yourself talk.

And the artists and the audience are one. There is actually conversation between the artist and the crowd. And many times you can see that the artists just hanging out and having some beers with the crowd long after their gig is done.

Californian Chris Pierce was the first act and blew everyone away with his soulful singing along with his driving acoustic guitar. He will be a guest on Lazy Sunday this week so check it out. Imagine a Jack Johnson with Bill Wither’s soul. I hear that after Japan he is actually going to be playing with Jack in California.

The lovely Leyona joined Chris for a few songs toward the end of his set. And baby she CAN SING!!!!!!!!!

Have you ever seen Leyona live? Although she makes great albums, her presence and sexiness on stage just doesn’t come through on her records. It ‘s like watching a kitten turn into a tigress as she sets foot on stage.

Keison followed with his great songs and vocals. He doesn’t talk much, but he need only sing and he is deep conversation with the crowd. A great long set full of his hits that we have all come to know.

One of the great things about Thumbs Up is how close the audience and the performers are. After Chris’s set, I ended up on the same table as Chris and Leyona, and they started harmonizing with Keison right at the table, now that was some beautiful harmony singing….

And after all this, in the great THUMBS UP tradition, everyone is up on stage all together for an impromptu jam session. Imagine Keison, Chris and Leyona all up on stage grooving along for another thirty minutes. Leyona brought out her sister for some wonderful harmonies only siblings could produce.

素晴らしいギグだった。最高のアーティストに、最高の場所。横浜の『Thumbs Up』は、日本で１番のライブハウスじゃないかと思う。お客さんはみんな音楽だけじゃなくておいしい食べ物とお酒、そして会話にも夢中になれる。音が小さい訳ではないんだけど、かといって自分の声が聞こえないくらいに音が大きすぎたりもしないんだ。

そこでアーティストとオーディエンスは１つになる。『Thumbs Up』では、アーティストとお客さんが実際に会話をすることもあるんだ。ギグが終わった後、ビールを片手にアーティストがお客さんと仲良く喋っている光景を見るのは、しょっちゅうのこと。

その日最初のアクトは、カリフォルニアから来たChris Pierce。アコギを力強くかき鳴らしながらソウルフルに歌う彼の姿に、みんないきなり圧倒されてしまった。ちなみに彼は明日の『Lazy Sunday』のゲストなんだ。絶対にチェックした方がいいよ。彼を例えるとするならば、ビル・ウィザーズの魂を持ったジャック・ジョンソンってところかな。聞いたところによると、彼は日本でのツアーが終わった後は、カリフォルニアで本当にジャック・ジョンソンとプレイするらしいよ。

そして彼のギグの最後の方の数曲には、あのLeyonaが参加したんだ。

みんな、Leyonaのライブを観たことはある？彼女のアルバムももちろんすごいんだけど、レヨナの圧倒的な存在感とセクシーさはCDだけでは感じられないんだ。ステージに乗った瞬間に子猫がトラになる。ほんとにそんな光景を観ているみたいなんだ。

そしてクリスに続いてはKEISON。彼はあんまり多弁じゃない。でも、KEISONは歌うだけで、観客のみんなとじっくり会話をすることができるんだ。その日のセットは、ボクらがもうみんな知っているヒットソングが満載の、素晴らしいライブだった。

『Thumbs Up』の魅力の１つは、なんといっても観客とミュージシャンの近さ。Chrisのライブが終わった後、ボクは結局ChrisとLeyonaが座っているテーブルに一緒にいたんだけど、彼らはふいにKEISONの歌に合わせて、ボクのすぐそばでハーモニーを奏で始めたんだ。それはもう、本当に美しいハーモニーだったよ。

そしてKEISONのライブも終わり、当日のスケジュールが全て終了した後。これは『Thumbs Up』の伝統かもしれないね、その日演奏したアーティストたちがみんなステージに上がって、即興のジャムセッションを始めたんだ。想像してごらんよ。KEISONとChris、そしてLeyonaがみんなステージに上がって、３０分の間、セッションを繰り広げたんだんだよ。Leyonaは彼女の妹をステージに乗せて、素晴らしいハーモニーを聴かせてくれた。あれは姉妹じゃないと生み出せない音だね。
